Facial Ageing

Remarkable research shows how redundancy, divorce and even yo-yo dieting can lead to spurts of ageing.

If you thought ageing was due just to the passing of time you’d be wrong. A new study has shown that ageing happens in spurts, driven by the way we live and the trauma’s we suffer. Dr Rajiv Grover said that ageing in the mid face seemed to happen in dramatic spurts with up to 35% of a woman’s cheek loss happening in one year. So what are the factors that give us sunken cheeks, heavy jowls, line and wrinkles?  The most significant issue was yo-yo dieting (losing over 11lb in one year).  Other issues which caused facial ageing were stress, divorce, bereavement or illness. His advice, try and avoid yo-yo dieting, manage stress and try taking a vitamin D supplement, as we have so little sun it is easy to become deficient.  If this has happened to you, there are several ways to replace lost volume and add plumpness back to the cheeks and mid face eg Sculptra or a filler for a more instant result.  Have a chat with Debbie if you would like to know more about these treatments.

PROBLEM OF THE MONTH

Brown spots and pigmentation

 

 

 

Brown spots or areas of pigmentation often start to appear in our late thirties and forties.  This tends to be as a result of sun damage from many years before and can occur on areas of skin that are particularly exposed to the sun such as face, hands, forearms and décolletage. Just look at the difference between the top of your forearm and the underneath to see how the sun damages the skin!  Also, areas may appear on the face called melasma, caused by hormonal changes often seen on the forehead or cheeks.

Solution

By far the most effective treatment for pigmentation is IPL laser.  Using light energy it targets the pigment and causes it to fragment.  The melanin fragments are then absorbed by the body and eliminated.  Any surface flakes left can effectively be removed by microdermabrasion.  Treatment costs start from £40 per treatment and up to 6 may be needed to see the best result. For more superficial pigmentation, microdermabrasion alone can be quite effective, using crystals to take of the superficial layers of the skin included the brown areas. A course of up to 6 is usually required to get the best result.  Microdermabrasion costs £45 per treatment or 3 for £99.
